As has become customary, one of the most beloved marathons among runners will be held in Valencia again this year. Over the distance of 42 kilometers and 195 meters, which run on a course considered the fastest in Spain and the flattest in Europe, runners from all over the world will meet, who, taking advantage of the occasion, will also be able to admire the beauty of one of the most fascinating Spanish cities.
Historical background
The Valencia Divina Pastora Marathon traces its origins back to the early 1980s, thanks to the initiative of the Sociedad Deportiva Correcaminos, a very important city sports club, which decided to organize this event by opening it up to participants from all over the world. The first edition was held on March 29, 1981, curiously (but perhaps intentionally) on the same day as the London Marathon. Since then, thanks to the enthusiasm and participation of professionals and ordinary enthusiasts, the Valencia Marathon has become a regular event, whose course changes every year but ensures the absence of any elevation gain. In addition, running through the streets of the city, participants have the opportunity to retrace some sections of the Grand Prix motor race. The starting and finishing point corresponds with the City of Arts and Sciences, one of the most visited places in Valencia and designed by the great architect Santiago Calatrava.
Parallel events
During the marathon, Valencia will light up with many parallel events that participants and their companions can enjoy before or after racing. One of these is the classic “Paella Party,” which will take place the day before the marathon and will be a mouthwatering opportunity to sample one of the best local gastronomic specialties. Also twenty-four hours before the race is the “Breakfast Run” dedicated to those who want to train before the marathon, running five kilometers and ending with a nice typical Valencian breakfast. There are also many initiatives dedicated to children, who will be able to get closer to the world of marathons thanks to “Marathon at School,” an event aimed at raising children’s awareness of the importance of practicing sports; and the Mini Marathon dedicated precisely to the little ones. For those who, on the other hand, choose the Valencia Marathon to make their debut in the specialty, the so-called “Rookie’s Corner” is organized, featuring meetings with doctors and experts who will be on hand to answer questions or give useful information to novice participants. There will be no shortage of musical performances, such as “Music & Run,” which will take place at the entrance to Expo Deporte Valencia, the place where bibs and the runner’s bag are picked up. And shopkeepers will also make their contribution, with the “Shops Also Run the Marathon” initiative, during which several contests are held for the most beautiful storefronts.
