Optional Excursions in Liguria

ALBENGA, THE ANCIENT MILL AND THE OLIVE OIL MUSEUM
Meet with our expert guide and visit Albenga, a seaside town and center of fruit and vegetable production.
The historic center preserves the Roman urban layout of the ancient city of the “Liguri Inganni”
and boasts valuable medieval monuments. It climbs toward the archaeological zone and the Via Julia
Augusta, taking the direct route to Mount Bignone (over 500 meters). The guided tour flanks
the ruins of a necropolis of Roman origin, which convey a feeling of ghostly
immobility in sharp contrast to the enchanting island of Gallinara in the background, a jewel set
in the sea.
The guided tour continues to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Guardia, an ancient Marian shrine
whose construction began in the 17th century, still a pilgrimage destination. Free lunch.
Followed by a visit to an Ancient Oil Mill, which for more than 100 years has stood within the medieval walls of the city
of Albenga!
It is still the place where the family produces extra virgin olive oil “mosto” cold pressed and where they
sells all the specialties of Ligurian cuisine that it produces, in full respect of artisanal processing
and without the addition of additives and preservatives.
What makes the Frantoio one of the most spectacular places in the area is precisely its location within
the medieval walls, which in turn merge onto other walls of Roman origin. Under the
vaults it is possible to find old farm tools, jars, presses, objects, which Nino collected over the
years, and photos of olive trees, not to mention the unmistakable smell of olive processing.
Oil processing has also, of course, had to adapt to EEC directives: that is why the old
millstones remained only for display, to leave room for technology, today the protagonist
of oil production.Next to the Oil Mill there is also the Olive Oil Museum, strongly desired by the family
of the owners and entirely dedicated to the Oil Civilization: in these spaces you can see and touch
the entire history of one of the oldest and most important jobs in the Liguria region.
Today the Museum is connected via an underground tunnel to the Oil Mill: thus a single
space entirely dedicated to the world of oil and its production. In it is housed the entire history
of the oil civilization, but also a lot of contemporary art, from painting, through sculpture,
arriving at photography; in fact, in these rooms the owners offer artists the opportunity to exhibit
their own works.
The museum has hosted the likes of Federico Moccia, Antonio Ricci and Vittorio Sgarbi.

sea. From here, in fact, you can admire the fishing boats on the coast and enjoy the clean beach and
the clear sea of the Ligurian Riviera. And, why not, take a refreshing dip.
