Running is one of the most popular physical activities in the world, but when it comes to choosing between trail running and road running, many people wonder which is best for them. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice will depend on various factors, including personal preferences, training goals, and physical condition. In this article, we will look at the distinguishing features of both options to help you figure out which is the best choice for you.

Trail Running: Adventure in the great outdoors

Trail running involves running on natural trails, often in mountainous, forested or hilly environments. Here are some reasons why you might consider trail running:

1. Contact with nature: If you love living in nature, scenic views and the feeling of adventure, trail running is perfect for you. You can explore trails surrounded by natural beauty, away from the traffic and concrete of cities.

2. Variety of terrain: Running on trails means tackling a variety of terrain, including roots, rocks, mud and steep climbs. This comprehensive workout engages many muscle groups, improving strength and coordination.

3. Peaceful tranquility: Trails offer a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, ideal for those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

4. Less stress on joints: Running on softer terrain than the concrete of roads reduces the impact on joints, making trail running a more suitable choice for those with joint problems.

Road Running: Speed and Structure

Road running involves running on paved roads or sidewalks. Here are some reasons why you might prefer it:

1. Structured Training: Road running offers the ability to plan routes precisely, monitor distance and keep track of times. It is ideal for those who want to follow specific training plans.

2. Speed: On the road, it is easier to maintain a consistent speed, which is important for runners looking to improve times or participate in endurance races.

3. Convenience and accessibility: Roads are easily accessible and can be found in many urban areas. It is a practical solution for those who need to train in the city or are short on time.

4. Safety: The streets are generally well lit and supervised, which can help improve safety while running.

The Choice is Yours

Ultimately, the choice between trail running and road running depends on your goals, personal preferences and physical condition. Many people choose to alternate between the two modes to enjoy the benefits of both. Whatever your choice, remember the importance of listening to your body, maintaining proper posture and investing in appropriate footwear to reduce the risk of injury. Whether you choose road running or trail running, the most important thing is to enjoy the physical activity and maintain it as an integral part of your active lifestyle. Happy running!

Sunday, October 31, will be the time for the 15th edition of Trail Monte Casto. Last year’s critical situation due to the pandemic had caused ASD Trail Monte Casto to feel that it was not appropriate to organize the event.
On Thursday, August 5, registration opened, discounted prices are provided for those who register by September 30, 2021, will close on October 23 or upon reaching 800 total registrants.
The races have been approved at the regional level by FIDAL and the 44 km will award the title of CSEN Ultratrail Italian Champion.
You will need to be in good standing with a Green Pass to register.
On the trails of the Deer Valley and Alta Valsessera in recent years have climbed the podiums, many athletes of national and international level who are absolute protagonists of our sport. In the men’s field, just to name the best known: Cristian Minoggio, Luca Carrara, Filippo Bianchi, Davide Cheraz, Gabriele Abate, Danilo Lantermino, and the Nepalese Dawa Sherpa. Among the women podium finishers were: Sonia Locatelli, Sonia Glarey, Chiara Giovando,Yulia Baykova, Scilla Tonetti, Federica Boifava, Cinzia Bertasa, Virginia Oliveri, Lisa Borzani, Cecilia Mora, Marina Plavan, Emanuela Brizio, and Frenchwomen Maud Gobert and Corinne Favre.
As for the long race, it will cover a good 44 km with an elevation gain of 2050 m almost entirely on trails and dirt roads.
The route is highly spectacular touching some enchanting corners of the Biellese, starting from Mount Casto, continuing through the pastures of Monduro and Carcheggio and climbing to Bocchetto Sessera (1380m) via the classic mule track used for transhumance with incomparable views of the Biellese mountains and the Piedmont Alps.
The race entry into Oasi Zegna leads first to Mount Massaro, then to the characteristic Scheggiola hut, past the Baraccone alpine pasture and across the beautiful humpback bridge to the Piana del Ponte hut, where athletes will find festive refreshments.
Here the trail begins to climb again to pass alongside the Militia bridge, reach the Casa del Pescatore and climb deep into the pine forest to the beautiful Artignaga alpine pasture and back to Bocchetto Sessera.
A beautiful path then leads trailers to Pratetto, then to Fraz.Trabbia di Callabiana, a long traverse leads to Locato, to then face the last ruggedness of the day, the climb to the locality “Quadetto.” From here a traverse through the woods allows to reach the hamlet Colma and downhill return to the starting point.
The start is scheduled for 7 a.m. for those who will participate in the 44 km, at 9 a.m. for those who will take the start of the 20 km (850 m+)and at 9:30 a.m. the start of the 8 km (non-competitive walk, registration on site) will be given.
It will be possible to follow the competition for those who are interested, at different points via car transfers.
The event is a real advertisement to make known some almost unknown corners of the territory, small jewels that the Biella area gives to those who love to immerse themselves in nature.
This event is distinguished by the atmosphere of conviviality and celebration.
