Clothing for when it’s cold

When it is cold and there is a need to go for a run either for routine training or as preparation for a half marathon, it may not be pleasant to do so in near-zero temperatures. For this reason, the choice of clothing is critical, to say the least.

The key to training in cold weather is to dress properly. Whether you are going outdoors for a run in the city park or on an athletic track, by following a number of tips you will manage to stay warm and dry for the duration of your jog.

Opt for multi-layered clothing

The main rule of thumb for winter workouts is to wear multi-layered garments, and specifically the advice is to opt depending on how cold the day is, for a moisture-wicking base layer such as merino wool that works great when temperatures are near zero. Merino wool by the way keeps you warm, does not become smelly during a hard workout, and absorbs moisture better than any synthetic material. To be avoided is cotton, which instead becomes damp and does not dry easily. For the second layer, the choice may be a lightweight vest preferably made of a synthetic material such as polyester or fleece. Finally, a windproof jacket with or without insulation depending on the temperature creates a perfect outer layer for any training session in particularly cold temperatures.

What to wear for training in very cold temperatures

In temperatures ranging from 4 to 10 degrees Celsius, for training such as a run in preparation for a half-marathon or any other running event, lightweight shorts with a long-sleeved shirt layered over a T-shirt or tank top are enough to keep you warm. Once warm, you can remove the long-sleeved shirt and perhaps wear lightweight gloves and covers over your ears in case these body extremities get cold. For temperatures ranging from -1 down to-5, the ideal clothing, on the other hand, consists of lightweight or windproof and thermal running pants depending on the degree of cold.

Accessories to use in excessively cold weather

Gloves and hat are a must for winter workouts as well as essential you may need thermal socks to keep your toes warm. In fact, your hands will become especially cold as circulation worsens while your body is working vigorously. A winter hat works great especially in extremely cold temperatures, but if there is no exaggerated frost even a baseball type might be a good solution to keep your head warm and prove invaluable in snow and rain.
